Why KJ Loves
Slow Cooker Chocolate Lava Cake
A chocolate lava cake cooked straight in my slow cooker? Count me in! We loved how fudgy and decadent this cake was – plus it was pretty darn easy to make!
Slow Cooker Chocolate Lava Cake Ingredients
Chocolate cake ingredients
This lava cake uses my Classic Chocolate Cake recipe for the cake batter. You’ll need baking basics (flour, sugar, eggs, vegetable oil, etc.…) as well as brewed hot coffee, Dutch-processed cocoa powder, and a cup of heavy cream.
Instant pudding mix
This is what helps make the cake all sorts of gooey and delicious! Prepare according to package instructions.
Chocolate chips
We want this lava cake to be as fudgy as possible, so we’re going all in on the chocolate ingredients.
How To Make Chocolate Lava Cake in a Slow Cooker
01) Make the cake batter
Spray the bottom and sides of a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray.
In a small bowl, whisk together the coffee and cocoa powder.
In a large bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, oil, and eggs. Whisk in the coffee & cocoa mixture. Add in all the remaining dry ingredients and whisk until smooth.
If you want a more detailed run-down, check out my chocolate cake recipe.
Pour the cake batter into the prepared slow cooker.
02) Top with (you guessed it…) more chocolate.
Top with the prepared pudding mix, followed by the chocolate chips.
03) Bake the cake in the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on high until super fudgy and decadent. Remove from the heat immediately, as the cake will continue to cook even on the warm setting.
Serving Slow Cooker Chocolate Lava Cake
To be honest, it’s difficult for this dessert to make it to a bowl.
This is one of those desserts you’ll be tempted to eat out of the baking dish.
That said, this chocolate lava cake recipe is even more delicious if you have the patience to serve some ice cream or freshly whipped cream on top!
Chocolate Lava Cake FAQs:
What size slow cooker should I use?
This chocolate lava cake recipe calls for a 6-quart slow cooker.
Can I use regular cocoa powder?
Dutch cocoa powder will give you richer results. However, you can still use regular cocoa powder for this recipe if you don’t have Dutch cocoa powder on hand.
What’s the difference between Dutch cocoa powder and regular cocoa powder?
The main difference between Dutch-processed cocoa powder and regular cocoa powder is that Dutch-processed cocoa powder is alkalized, meaning the acidity of the cocoa bean is neutralized. This results in a darker, more mellow flavor. Dutch-processed cocoa powder is available in most grocery stores and can also be ordered online.
Can I make this in advance and reheat?
I don’t recommend reheating slow cooker chocolate lava cake, as it will cause the cake to continue to bake and dry out. It’s best served warm the day you make it!

This fudgy lava cake is baked in a slow cooker for an indulgently decadent dessert that doesn’t require a ton of work. It’s perfect for a party, romantic date, or a fun girls’ night.
Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting down the sides and get ready for an intensely chocolatey experience.
Ingredients
- 1 cup brewed coffee, hot
- 3/4 cup Dutch processed cocoa powder
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3.9 oz packet chocolate pudding, prepared according to package instructions
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
Instructions
- In a small bowl, whisk together the coffee and cocoa powder until smooth. Set aside to cool. In a large bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, vegetable oil and eggs until smooth. Whisk in the vanilla extract and the coffee and cocoa mixture until combined.
- Add the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in with the wet ingredients. Whisk until smooth and there are no clumps.
- Spray a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Evenly pour the cake batter into the slow cooker.
- Top the cake batter with the prepared pudding and chocolate chips.
- Cook on high for 2 1/2 – 3 hours. Start checking it around the 2 hour mark to make sure that it is not cooking too fast. The center should jiggle but be mostly set when moved.
- Remove from the heat immediately and serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Enjoy!
Notes
- Want to go extra indulgent? Prepare the pudding with either whole milk or heavy cream. The mixture will be thick and will need to be dolloped onto the cake batter.
- Every slow cooker cooks differently, so keep an eye out that the cake is not cooking too fast.
