Why KJ Loves
Gluten Free Cherry Crisp
This cherry crisp recipe is perfectly sweet and tart – it’s summer in a dessert! I love to use frozen cherries for this recipe for ease, but fresh cherries can also be used!
Cherry Crisp — Just How You Like It
This classic cherry crisp recipe can be made with or without oats, gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan! Each different combo of ingredients will get you a slightly different flavor.
You can also choose whether to use frozen cherries or fresh cherries. I usually choose frozen cherries to make life easier. (Just know that the baking time will be a little shorter with fresh cherries.)
The only big thing I do NOT recommend is using cherry pie filling. That syrupy canned stuff will not get you the fresh, delicious dessert you’re looking for. Mixing up a quick filling with frozen cherries will only take a few minutes, and it is worth it.

Pitting Fresh Cherries
If you want to go all out and use fresh cherries for this recipe, this is how to pit them.
First, you’ll need a cherry pitter or a small knife.
The cherry pitter is much easier. Simply place the cherry in the tool and squeeze to pop out the pit. It’s quick and keeps the cherries mostly intact.
If you don’t have a pitter, no worries! Use a small knife to cut around the cherry’s center, then twist the halves apart. Remove the pit with your fingers or the knife.
The process can be a bit messy, but there’s nothing like fresh cherries in your crisp. Plus, pitting cherries is a great way to get family or friends involved in making this delicious dessert.
Just keep an eye on those helpers — they might eat more cherries than they pit!
Cherry Crisp Ingredients
For the Filling
-
- Cherries (pitted) – I like to use frozen cherries, but you can also use fresh. You’ll want to get dark, sweet cherries (avoid tart cherries for this recipe!).
- Coconut Sugar – Or substitute an equal amount of brown sugar
- Flour – Gluten-free flour or regular flour
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla Extract
- Almond Extract
For the Topping
-
- Flour – Gluten-free flour or regular flour
- Oats – Oats are naturally gluten-free, but they can be contaminated with wheat during processing. If you’re serving this to someone with severe gluten intolerance or Celiac disease, use certified gluten-free oats.
- Finely Chopped Pecans – If you don’t like nuts, leave these out
- Coconut Sugar – Or substitute an equal amount of brown sugar
- Coconut Oil (melted) – You can use ghee or melted butter instead. (Always measure coconut oil when it is melted.)
- Almond Extract
- Vanilla Extract
- Salt
- Cinnamon
How To Make Cherry Crisp Dessert
1
Mix up the filling.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Mix the cherries with the sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, almond extract, and flour.
Pour the filling into a 2.5-quart baking dish (or a similar size, like a 9 x 9 Pyrex).
2
Make the topping.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, pecans, and sugar. Pour in the melted coconut oil, almond extract, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt and stir to combine until a loose crumble forms.
3
Top and bake.
Evenly cover the homemade cherry filling with the topping mixture.
Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the cherries are bubbly and caramelized
4
Serve!
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (dairy-free, if you’d like!). Enjoy!
5
Wash the dishes. How sad.
Customize Your Cherry Crisp
Gluten-Free Mixed Cherry Crisp
Use gluten-free flour, like Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free flour that is cup for cup. If you have a severe gluten intolerance or Celiac disease, make sure you get oats that are certified gluten-free.
Nut-Free Mixed Cherry Crisp
Leave the nuts out if you’re not a fan (or allergic). You’ll end up with a little less topping, so I’d recommend doubling the topping recipe if you like lots of “crisp” on your crisp.
Grain-Free Cherry Crisp
To make a grain-free cherry crisp, leave out the oats. Change the amount of chopped pecans to 1 ½ cups and adjust the gluten-free flour to 1 ½ cups.
Dairy-Free Mixed Cherry Crisp
Choose coconut oil instead of melted butter when you’re making your crisp topping.
Vegan Cherry Crisp
To create a mouth-watering vegan cherry crisp, use coconut oil (instead of butter) in the topping.
How Substitutions Affect Taste
Coconut Oil vs. Ghee vs. Butter
- Coconut Oil: If you like coconut oil, you’ll enjoy its subtle flavor in this recipe.
- Ghee: A lactose-free butter alternative that is slightly closer to that classic crisp flavor. Good for those who are only slightly sensitive to dairy.
- Butter: The traditional choice for the most classic taste.
Coconut Sugar vs. Brown Sugar
- Coconut Sugar: Adds a rich, caramel flavor and is slightly healthier. Sweetens the berries without overpowering them.
- Brown Sugar: Gives a classic, sweeter taste with a touch of molasses.
Gluten-Free Flour vs. Regular Flour
- Gluten-Free Flour: I find that Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free flour works well with minimal taste difference.
Pecans or Nut-Free
Pecans: Add crunch and earthy flavor. Omit if desired.
