Homestyle Lasagna is a comforting classic. Lasagna noodles are layered together with a saucy ground beef mixture, cheese and a secret ingredient that truly gives this lasagna a homestyle feel. Slice into all the delicious layers of this Italian casserole!

Secret Ingredient
You may be asking, what makes a lasagna “homestyle?” Well, to me, it’s the addition of the secret ingredient…
Stay with me – I know it may sound crazy to some of you, but it’s the best companion to lasagna! I will always choose it over ricotta cheese, because it is what I grew up eating! It gives the lasagna the rich, cheesiness, but also melds together wonderfully with the meat sauce. It’s just the best! Trust me with this one.
If you don’t want a distinguished layer of cottage cheese, I would recommend layering it together with the meat sauce so it blends in. For me, I put it all in one layer. It’s the best bite!

Lasagna Layers
First things first, as long as you’re starting with sauce on the bottom and ending with cheese on the top, there really isn’t a wrong way to layer together a lasagna!
Since there isn’t a rhyme or reason to the layers, do what your heart desires! Personally, I love thick, distinguished layers so you know exactly what is in the lasagna. Others like to combine and meld everything together and that works too! Here’s my order of go:
- Meat sauce
- Noodles
- Meat sauce
- Noodles
- Cottage cheese
- Mozzarella
- Noodles
- Meat sauce
- Mozzarella
- Noodles
- Meat sauce
- Noodles
- Meat sauce
- Mozzarella
Granted, the amount of layers will also depend on how deep and wide your pan is. Have leftover noodles? Sprinkle on some salt and have a little snack!

How to Serve
You know what is so great about lasagna? I mean, besides the obvious best part: the crispy, cheesy edge pieces.
But, it can be served for so many different occasions! From a family weeknight meal, to a meal-prep option (leftovers are the best!), to Christmas Eve to a dinner party. Lasagna fits the bill for it all!

Homestyle Lasagna
- Total Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes
- Yield: 10 servings 1x
Description
Homestyle Lasagna is a comforting classic. Lasagna noodles are layered together with a saucy ground beef mixture, cheese and a secret ingredient that truly gives this lasagna a homestyle feel. Slice into all the delicious layers of this Italian casserole!
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- (2) 24 oz jars marinara/pasta sauce of choice
- 16 oz lasagna noodles
- 24 oz small curd cottage cheese
- 16 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet over medium heat, break apart and brown the ground beef. Add in the onion and sauté for 3-5 minutes. Add in the chopped garlic and Worcestershire sauce. Pour in the the pasta sauce and gently stir to combine. Reduce the heat to low and allow to simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
- Use a 9×13 pan and start layering the lasagna. Start with a layer of the meat sauce on the bottom followed by noodles, meat sauce, noodles, cottage cheese, mozzarella, noodles, meat sauce, noodles, meat sauce, mozzarella, noodles and mozzarella. The layers will vary greatly depending on preference and how deep your baking pan is. As long as you start with meat sauce on the bottom and save enough cheese to cover the top, you are good to go!
- Bake for 55 minutes to 1 hour, or until the lasagna is golden brown and bubbly. Allow to set for 10-15 minutes prior to cutting and serving for more distinguished layers. Enjoy!
Notes
- Freshly shredded mozzarella cheese will melt better and be more gooey than pre-shredded. Either option works!
- This lasagna can be made in advance and re-heated prior to serving. Good for 3-5 days refrigerated properly.
