Making homemade biscuits doesn’t need to be a daunting task. If you follow along a few simple steps, you can have warm biscuits on your table in no time! Just don’t over-think it and have some fun making these Homestyle Cheddar Biscuits:

How to make these Homestyle Cheddar Biscuits:

First off, you want to make sure that you have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go. Keeping the cold ingredients cold is a key step to a good, flaky biscuit! Start off by “cutting” the butter into the dry ingredients by either using a pastry cutter or your hands until a crumbly, gravel-like texture forms. This is where you’ll want to make sure to work semi-quickly and to not melt the butter. Add in the cheese then the milk and gently fold together until a rough dough forms.

Up next, it’s time to roll the dough out! This is the fun part to roll up your sleeves and go to work. Gently form the dough togeher and roll out onto a lightly floured surface. I like to keep the dough around 1/2 inch thick to have a nice sized biscuit.

Then, you get to cut your biscuits! You can free-hand them like I typically do, or use a 2-inch wide round cookie cutter. Get as many biscuits cut out as you can before folding the scraps back over themselves, re-rolling it out and cutting more biscuits. All you have to do is gently repeat this process until all the dough is used!

Finally, brush the tops of the biscuits with a little melted butter and bake until golden brown and delicious! Just try to resist eating one of these warm from the oven – I dare you! Just kidding, you don’t want to miss out on a warm, flaky, buttery, cheesy biscuit!

How to Serve these Homestyle Cheddar Biscuits:

Serve these Homestyle Cheddar Biscuits warm with some butter or honey, or use them to dunk into your favorite soups (like this Minestrone Soup) or stews! They make a perfect side dish, breakfast (think of a breakfast sandwich with these!!), dinner roll or just to have some yummy biscuits on hand!

John aksed me what brand these biscuits were when he took a bite out them, because they are so darn good! He says: “Perfectly dense, but yet light and airy and just the right amount of cheese.” You gotta try these biscuits out for yourself!

Description

Homestyle Cheddar Biscuits are everything a biscuit should be! Buttery, flaky and speckled with cheddar cheese – you really can’t go wrong! Pulling one of these Homestyle Cheddar Biscuits apart and spreading a pad of butter on or dunking into your favorite stew is dream-like. We couldn’t keep our hands off of these!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter, cold and cut into cubes
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup milk, plus 1-2 tablespoons depending on how the dough comes together
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl. Add in the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until a gravely texture forms, being careful to not melt or over-work the butter. Stir in the cheddar cheese.
  2. Starting with 3/4 cup of milk, fold it into the dry ingredients. If it is still too dry or not coming together at all, add in one tablespoon of milk at a time until it does. You want a loose dough. Be careful to not over-work. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently form into a ball.
  3. Lightly flour your rolling pin and roll the dough out into a 1/2 inch thick sheet. Use a knife or a 2-inch wide, round cookie cutter to cut your biscuits. Gently fold the scraps back on top of each other and roll out again and cut more biscuits. Repeat until all the dough has been used.
  4. Transfer the biscuits to a parchment paper lined baking sheet and brush the tops with the melted butter. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits are light and fluffy. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Make sure to keep your cold ingredients cold – this will help to have a light and fluffy biscuit!
  • You can use a mild or sharp cheddar cheese.
  • Let the biscuits cool completely before transferring them to an air-tight container for leftovers.
  • Prep Time: 30 minutes
  • Cook Time: 15 minutes
