What Makes This Recipe So Easy
No Marinating Required
You don’t have to plan ahead to make these easy chicken skewers. An easy spice rub is all you need to add a ton of flavor in no time.
Simple Prep
Mix up a rub and prep the chicken skewers for grilling. That’s all you need to do to get dinner going. (Seriously.)
Assemble Whenever
You can easily assemble these BBQ kabobs ahead of time. Cut up the chicken, toss it with seasonings, and put it on the skewers. Then, store the chicken in the fridge. When you’re ready to cook the skewers, simply pop them on the grill. Voila — dinner’s ready in no time!
BBQ Chicken Skewer Ingredients
Chicken breasts (boneless, skinless)
Cut the chicken into 1-inch cubes. You could also use dark chicken/chicken thighs instead.
Olive oil
Rub Spices
Chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, salt
BBQ Sauce
Use your favorite BBQ sauce for this skewer recipe. My favorite is Sweet Baby Ray’s! Want to kick up the heat? Use a spicy BBQ sauce!
Skewers
You can use metal skewers or wooden skewers. If you’re using the wooden ones, soak them beforehand (this helps prevent a fire!).
How To Make Easy BBQ Skewers
01) Prep the chicken skewers.
Cut the chicken into 1-inch cubes. Toss the chicken with the seasonings and olive oil. Evenly arrange on skewers.
02) Start grilling.
Preheat the grill to high heat.
Grill on each side until nearly cooked through.
03) Baste with BBQ sauce and finish grilling.
Evenly brush the skewers with the BBQ sauce during the last couple minutes of cooking to get a nice, sticky char on the BBQ sauce. (It’s important to wait until the end so the sauce doesn’t burn!)
Finish grilling the chicken until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
Enjoy!
Ways To Serve BBQ Skewers
Serve these BBQ chicken kabobs however you would serve your favorite BBQ chicken! Classic summer sides and drinks are always a hit.
You could also serve these as tacos, BBQ chicken lettuce wraps, or over mixed greens as a salad.
And don’t forget to finish things off with a quintessential summer dessert, like Mixed Berry Crumble and ice cream.
BBQ Chicken Skewers FAQs
Can I add veggies?
Yes! Before grilling, you can add veggies like bell peppers or onions to the kabobs. You could even add fruit, like fresh pineapple chunks.
Which cut of chicken is best for skewers?
You can use chicken breasts or chicken thighs for BBQ skewers. Chicken breasts are leaner and will cook faster. With a high fat content, chicken thighs are little more forgiving if they’re overcooked.
What happens if you don't soak the skewers prior to grilling?
If you don’t soak wooden skewers before grilling, they are likely to catch fire and burn. Soaking them in water for at least 30 minutes helps make the skewers less flammable.
Do you put BBQ sauce on the chicken before grilling?
You’ll want to brush on the barbecue sauce during the last few minutes of grilling. This keeps the sugars in the sauce from burning.
How do you keep chicken skewers from sticking to the grill?
If you let the chicken sear before you try to move it, the chicken will release from the grates more easily.
How do you cut boneless chicken breasts for skewers?
Start by slicing the breast lengthwise into 1-2 inches wide strips. Then, cut the strips into bite-sized cubes, about 1-1.5 inches.
How do you thread chicken on skewers?
