Day Trip – CO

This past Friday John and I were truly spoiled with a little, mini vaca.

We were both able to get Friday off from work, woke up in the wee hours of the morning, threw some things together and were off to the air strip. You know when you have to go to airport, wait in line, get a headache from the smell of the airplane and all those people packed together, and then wait for your ears to finish popping once you land? That’s just me at least ( can you tell I’m a huge fan of flying? 😉 – but this was not the case this time around! How picture perfect can it be to just show up, hop on the jet with only people you know, sit back and relax ( and to not have to turn your cell phone off?! ) until you land and your rental car is waiting for you right on the runway? Seriously, I will never take that for granted this past experience when the next time I have to listen to a crying baby the whole plane ride and also getting the luck of the draw with the middle seat and the guy in front you who reclined his chair back too far. But, no complaining because either way flying is flying and we are blessed to be able to have the opportunity to do so.

Once we landed, we took the short drive down to Boulder winding through the foothills to get ready to hike the Flatirons. Of course, the mandatory coffee stop was made first 🙂

Gearing up at Whole Foods with waters and snacks, we made the drive down Baseline Road to Chautauqua Trailhead to start our hike. I struggled to begin with, because I could not figure out for the life of me why my best pair of socks kept sliding down my heel to my toes before we even started the incline – I mean I paid good money for these shouldn’t they be doing their job?! Needless to say, they are right and left foot designated socks and it took me a couple stops to figure out I had them on the wrong feet… You can go ahead and say it – major blonde moment.  You can see the struggle was real. John thought it was hilarious.

After that it was smooth sailing. Until uou realized that the beautiful, smooth trail you started out on …

But, we had a blast and it was a fun challenge. I loved the way up (I’m addicted to the stairclimber) but the descend down is what killed me, because I did not wear shoes that supported my ankles and they kept rolling from side to side on the rocks. With that being said, it was opposite for John because he was the smarter of the two of us and wore actual hiking boots 🙂

We ended up only hiking the first and second Flatirons because of our time limit before we had to be back on the plane – next time we’re coming for ya Royal Arch. We both felt refreshed and energized after the three hour hike and went to go make some of our favorite stops and of course fill our rumbling bellies before our flight back home.

It was amazing to see all of God’s beautiful creation all around us and it is definitely something we want to come back and do again. Here’s some of the pictures that give you a glimpse into how beautiful and fun it was.

He said he felt at home in the mountains with his mountain-man beard ?

You can tell we had different views about the incline.

Back to home we go.
