I have to admit, when I first wrote down the idea for this recipe, it wasn’t one that I was super excited about. BUT, this bad boy went and flipped my world upside down! You guys, this tortellini dish is SO GOOD. There’s so much flavor with minimal ingredients. Let’s break it down:
- Butter
- Grape tomatoes
- Garlic
- Salt
- Sugar
- White wine
- Heavy cream
- Fresh basil
- Tortellini
When you give simple ingredients a little bit of time and love, you can get a DELICIOUS outcome! That is exactly what this pasta dish is – don’t underestimate it like I did!

If you’re like me, tortellini can often be something that is over-looked when going to the grocery store. But this recipe reminded me of how great they are!
Not only are tortellini scrumptious, but they have such a great shelf life in your refrigerator or freezer! And cook up in like 5 minutes! How great is that?
That means, if you need a last minute dinner recipe, Creamy Tomato Basil Tortellini is here for you. Whip out a bag of tortellini, boil a pot of water and get going!
For this recipe, I like to use a 5-cheese filled tortellini. It just adds to the creamy decadence! There are many different varieties and fillings for tortellini, so if you want to experiment, go for it!

Description
Creamy Tomato Basil Tortellini is a decadent pasta dish that you don’t want to miss out on! Grape tomatoes are braised in butter and garlic until deliciously jammy. The pan is de-glazed with white wine and then swirled with heavy cream. Fresh basil adds a bright pop of flavor and each tortellini is perfectly covered. Each bite is pure pasta bliss!
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 16 oz grape tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 2 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 3 tablespoons chopped, fresh basil
- 20 oz cheese tortellini
- Parmesan cheese for serving
Instructions
- Melt the butter over medium heat in a large pan. Add in the grape tomatoes and gently sauté for a couple minutes, not allowing the butter to burn. Add in the salt, garlic and sugar. Reduce the heat to low and braise the tomatoes in the butter for about 20-25 minutes until jammy, mashing and breaking down the tomatoes every few minutes.
- Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the tortellini according to package instructions. Being careful to not overcook the tortellini.
- Deglaze the pan with the white wine and stir to combine. Pour in the heavy cream and turn off the heat. Add in the fresh basil and tortellini and stir to completely coat the tortellini in the sauce.
- Serve with parmesan cheese or garlic bread if desired. Enjoy!
Notes
- Roma or Grape tomatoes can be used for this recipe.
- Fresh basil makes the biggest difference over dried basil. Definitely go for the fresh!
- This pasta recipe stores and re-heats very nicely as leftovers.
