Creamed Spinach Casserole is a side dish worthy of the holiday table! Tender, fresh spinach is simmered in an Asiago-cream cheese sauce, topped with buttery bread crumbs and baked until perfectly bubbly. Serve this Creamed Spinach Casserole alongside a holiday roast or set on your weeknight dinner table.



For the creamed spinach filling:

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup Asiago cheese, shredded
  • 5 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 16 oz fresh spinach
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For the breadcrumb topping:

  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 cup plain breadcrumbs


For the creamed spinach filling:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Melt the butter in the bottom of a large skillet or braiser on medium heat. Add in the onion and sauté until translucent, about a few minutes, avoiding any browning. Add in the garlic and sauté until fragrant.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and whisk in the heavy cream until smooth. Add in the shredded Asiago and softened cream cheese and stir to combine. Simmer on low heat, whisking throughout, until the sauce is creamy, smooth and thickened, about 5 minutes
  3. Working in batches, add in the fresh spinach until wilted and combined. If the skillet used is not oven-safe, transfer the creamed spinach filling to a baking dish at this point.

For the breadcrumb topping:

  1. Combine the melted butter together with the breadcrumbs in a small bowl. Evenly top the creamed spinach with the breadcrumb topping.
  2. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!


  • Fresh spinach is preferred for this recipe. If using frozen, follow package instructions for defrosting and draining as extra liquid is not wanted in the recipe.
