Why KJ Loves

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread

This is everything that pumpkin bread should be – warm, comforting, perfectly spiced and everything nice! Plus, can you ever go wrong with chocolate chips?! PS: make this pumpkin bread gluten free, dairy free or regular!

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread Ingredients

  • Pumpkin Puree
  • Coconut Oil (melted)
  • Eggs
  • Sugar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Flour
  • Baking Soda
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Cinnamon
  • Chocolate Chips

Ingredient Tips

  • Make sure to get the pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling. You’ll use up most of an 8-ounce can. (Pro tip: Freeze any leftover pumpkin puree in an ice cube tray. Pop out a cube whenever you need a little pumpkin for smoothies, oatmeal, or even your morning latte.)
  • Measure the coconut oil after it’s melted.

You can make this into a gluten-free chocolate chip pumpkin bread recipe by using gluten-free flour. (I love Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free flour.)

How To Make Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread

1

Prep your oven and pan.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a bread loaf pan. (Not sure what kind of loaf pan you have, or want to find out what kind you should purchase? Check out this Guide to Loaf Pans.)

2

Mix the wet ingredients.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin puree, melted coconut oil, sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla until smooth.

3

Add the dry ingredients.

Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon to the wet ingredients. Stir with a rubber spatula until just combined and smooth. Fold in the chocolate chips, reserving a few for the topping.

4

Bake to perfection.

Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips on top. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

5

Cool and enjoy!

Allow the bread to cool before removing it from the pan and slicing. Serve warm and enjoy!

Variations

Here are some fun twists on this fall favorite:

  • Pumpkin Muffins or Mini Loaves: Turn this recipe into grab-and-go treats! For muffins, fill lined or greased muffin tins about 2/3 full. For mini loaves, divide the batter between 3-4 mini loaf pans. Keep an eye on them — they’ll cook faster than a full loaf!
  • Add Some Crunch: Fold in 1/2 cup of chopped nuts with the chocolate chips. Pecans or walnuts are classic choices.
  • Vary the Chocolate: Swap half the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips. The creamy sweetness of white chocolate pairs beautifully with pumpkin spice flavors. Plus, it looks pretty!
  • Make it Festive: Toss in a handful of dried cranberries along with the chocolate chips.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread FAQ

What size pan should I use?

For this pumpkin bread recipe, use a standard 9×5-inch loaf pan. If you only have an 8½x4½ inch pan, that works too, but you may need to adjust the baking time slightly.

How can you tell when pumpkin bread is done?

As the bread bakes, it will rise and form a crack on top — this means you’re close! Insert a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs, your pumpkin bread is ready. You can also use a thermometer; quickbreads are usually done at 200°F to 205°F.

How do you get the pumpkin bread out of the pan?

First, make sure to grease your pan well. You can also line it with parchment paper before adding the batter. Once baked, let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. If you’re not using parchment paper, run a knife along the edges to loosen the bread and gently dump it onto a cooling rack. If you’re using parchment paper, gently lift out the bread using the parchment paper overhang.

How do you store chocolate chip pumpkin bread?

Let your bread cool completely before storing, to prevent sogginess. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days or in the fridge for up to a week. You can also slice it and store individual portions in sealed plastic bags for a quick treat anytime!

Can I add other mix-ins to this pumpkin bread?

Absolutely! Try adding chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for extra crunch. You could also swap half the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips or add a handful of dried cranberries for a festive twist.

What causes pumpkin bread to crack on top?

That crack is a good sign! It happens because the outside of the bread cooks faster than the inside. As the inside continues to rise, it pushes against the set top crust, causing it to split. This creates that beautiful, rustic look we all love. It’s perfectly normal and a sign of a well-baked loaf!

How do I store this pumpkin bread?

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Can I freeze this bread?

Absolutely! Wrap the cooled loaf tightly in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil. It will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
