Why KJ Loves

Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

Chocolate cherry Bordeaux ice cream has always been one of my favorites, and this smoothie is all those delicious flavors in a healthier form! The coconut cream makes this smoothie perfectly creamy all while being dairy free.

All Things Cherry!

Not only are cherries delicious — they’re also a healthy fruit!

  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Can reduce inflammation
  • Full of Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber
  • Packed with heart-healthy nutrients
  • …and they even contain melatonin, which may improve your sleep!

Cherry Picking

Dark Sweet Cherries

These are slightly larger, deeper in color, and delectably sweet. They also have a higher sugar content than tart cherries. Bing cherries are a common type of sweet cherry.

Tart Cherries

These are brighter and smaller than sweet cherries. They’re usually cooked or processed and have a distinctively tart taste. They’re also called “sour cherries.”

Which Kind To Use

For the frozen cherries, go with pitted dark sweet cherries. These are the kind you’ll normally see in the frozen food section and form the base of this smoothie recipe.

For cherry juice, go with tart cherry. Tart cherry juice is more common, lower in sugar, and lends the perfect tart taste to the smoothie.

Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Ingredients

Frozen Cherries

Using pitted frozen cherries gives your smoothie a better texture. Plus, they’re often the cheaper option, and you don’t have to work at pitting each one! I like to use dark sweet cherries for this recipe.

Cherry Juice

Most of the time, you’ll see tart cherry juice at your grocery store. That’s what you want for this recipe.

Banana

You can use a fresh or frozen banana. Frozen bananas will make the smoothie thicker and creamier. Check out this post on freezing bananas if you want to save any iffy-looking bananas for future smoothies.

Coconut Cream

This is the kind that normally comes in a can and is a great way to make a creamy, dairy-free smoothie. If you have yogurt on hand, you could use it instead.

Dark Chocolate Chips (or Cocoa Nibs)

Use your favorite brand! If you want a chocolate cherry protein smoothie, you can use chocolate protein powder instead (the smoothie will look and taste different).

How To Make a Cherry Chocolate Smoothie

There are really only a few steps. (Especially since you don’t have to pit the cherries. Major win!)

1

Combine.

Add all your ingredients to the blender. You can use whatever kind of blender you have. I like this nutribullet blender

2

Blend.

If you are running into any issues, you may need to add a little more liquid to blend everything together.

3

Serve!

I think these glasses are just the cutest way to serve up a smoothie!

4

Wash the dishes. How sad.

Description

Indulge in an oh-so-decadent fusion of flavors with a Chocolate Cherry Smoothie.

Dark and sweet frozen cherries are blended with tart cherry juice, a banana, a creamy swirl of coconut cream, and intense dark chocolate chips.

This smoothie was the cherry on top of my day, and I can’t wait to make it again!

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 ½ cup frozen cherries
  • 1 cup cherry juice
  • 1 banana – fresh or frozen – if using frozen it will make the smoothie thicker and creamier
  • 1 cup coconut cream (this is the dairy free alternative to a yogurt that I’m using – yogurt can be used here instead)
  • ⅓ cup dark chocolate chips or cocoa nibs
  • 12 tablespoons honey depending on sweetness preference

Topping Ideas:

  • Sweet cherries – these are pricey but SO good.
  • Coconut whipped cream (or regular whipped cream)
  • Honey
  • Crushed dark chocolate

Instructions

  1. Add all of the ingredients together in a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth, pour into a glass and top with desired toppings and enjoy!

Notes

  1. Chocolate protein powder could also be used instead of the dark chocolate in this recipe. The end result of the smoothie will just look more brown instead of speckled.
