Why KJ Loves This Recipe
Cherry Sunrise Smoothie
I started making this smoothie recipe earlier this year and instantly became hooked! I love how simple yet flavorful and immune boosting it is. Perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up, to get your morning off to the right start or to amp up the vitamin c in your system with cold season upon us!
Ingredient Spotlight: Cherries
Frozen cherries are the secret to an amazing smoothie. They’re convenient (no pitting required!) and give your drink a perfectly frosty texture.
Another win: they’re often more budget-friendly than fresh cherries.
When you’re browsing the freezer aisle, you’ll likely find dark sweet cherries, a variation that’s plump, extra sweet, and darker in color. They contain more natural sugars than tart cherries, making them ideal for smoothies. Bing cherries are a popular type of dark cherry that you might recognize.
Cherry smoothie health benefits include:
- Rich in antioxidants: It’s always nice when a delicious smoothie also fights free radicals. 💪
- Anti-inflammatory: Cherries might help reduce inflammation and ease muscle soreness.
- Nutrient-dense: They’re a great source of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber.
- Heart-healthy: All the antioxidants and nutrients are great for your cardiovascular health!
- …a sleep aid? Cherries contain natural melatonin, which might give you a few extra zzz’s.
Cherry Orange Smoothie Ingredients
Frozen cherries
Grab a bag of pitted, frozen dark cherries from the freezer section!
Banana
If you want a thicker texture, use a frozen banana
Orange Juice
Grab your favorite brand of orange juice from the store (or go all out and use freshly squeezed orange juice!).
How To Make a Sunrise Smoothie
Blend all the ingredients until smooth.
That’s it! I love that this recipe doesn’t require any cutting or slicing. Just toss and go!
This recipe makes a smoothie with a slightly thinner texture. If you prefer a thicker smoothie, make sure to use a frozen banana. You can also add extra frozen cherries.
Cherry Sunrise Smoothie Variations
- Add some collagen or protein powder. I’d stick with vanilla or fruit flavored!
- Use a frozen banana for a thicker, creamier texture.
Extra smoothie left over?
No need to waste it!
Pour any leftover cherry orange smoothie into ice molds to freeze. Then, keep the frozen smoothie cubes in freezer bags.
Toss them in future smoothies, or use them as fun ice cubes for cocktails, juices, or tea!
