Ingredients Needed for BBQ Baked Beans
Being honest, this recipe truly shocked and surprised me. I had the idea of bbq baked beans and thought they’d be pretty good, but I wasn’t expecting them to be THIS good! Seriously! These little beans make for a darn good side dish and received so many compliments! Here are the ingredients needed to bring this side dish to life:
- Bacon – I like to use thick cut!
- Onion
- Garlic – I always keep this minced garlic stocked in my refrigerator!
- Salt
- Worcestershire sauce
- Light red kidney beans
- Dark red kidney beans
- BBQ sauce – Sweet Baby Ray’s is always my favorite! Choose your favorite one here.
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- Brown sugar
How to Make BBQ Baked Beans
Making baked beans from scratch can have a bad reputation, because it usually means starting from dry, uncooked beans (which takes hours). Not this time around! Using canned red kidney beans takes the brunt work out for us. This way, scrumptious bbq baked beans are only minutes away from being done. Here’s different ways to make them:
- Stovetop – this is the primary way that the instructions will include. Simply crisp the bacon, and then simmer all the ingredients together in one pot! 45 minutes later, you’ll be ready to rock and roll!
- Slow Cooker – just toss all the ingredients in, stir to combine and let the slow cooker do it’s thing! I still recommend crisping the bacon prior to adding it into the slow cooker, so you will need to use the stovetop for a little bit with this method as well.
- Instant Pot – you may or may not know that I am not a kitchen gadget person, and actually not an Instant Pot fan either (I know, I know – I’m crazy). But! That doesn’t mean that this recipe can’t be made in one! My mom loves her Instant Pot, so I grabbed the cooking advice from her. Crisp the bacon and sauté the onion in the bottom of the Instant Pot before adding in all of the rest of the ingredients. Then, pressure cook for 2-3 minutes before letting the steam release.
Tote these BBQ Baked Beans with you to your next bbq or Summer picnic, or serve as a weeknight side dish to some grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Leftovers re-heat like a dream.

BBQ Baked Beans are the perfect side dish for all your Summer dinners! I’m taking baked beans to the next level by swirling in bbq sauce, spices and crispy bacon – and an added bonus of only taking 45 minutes to make! Each spoon full is finger lickin’ good! A side dish that packs a flavor surprise to keep everyone going back for more.
Ingredients
- 8 oz thick-cut bacon, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 32 oz light red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- 32 oz dark red kidney beans drained and rinsed
- 1 cup bbq sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup yellow mustard
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
Instructions
- Preheat a Dutch oven or large pot over medium heat. Add in the bacon and sauté until browned and crispy. Transfer the bacon to a side plate for later use. Add in the onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-5 minutes, not allowing to burn. Add in garlic, salt and Worcestershire sauce.
- Add the light and dark red kidney beans into the pot along with the bbq sauce, ketchup, mustard and brown sugar. Stir to combine.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid and allow to simmer for 25-30 minutes. Enjoy!
Notes
- Slow cooker method: Add all of the ingredients into a slow cooker, stir to combine, cover with the lid and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6 hours. Crisping the bacon on the stovetop prior to adding it into the slow cooker is recommended.
- Instant Pot method: Sauté the bacon until crispy in the bottom of the Instant Pot. Transfer to a side plate and then add in the onion to sauté for a few minutes. Add in all of the ingredients, stir to combine, and then allow to pressure cook for 2-3 minutes before releasing the steam.
