Baked Chili Cheese Dogs is a simple twist on a classic hot dog dish. Hot dogs are piled high with a quick, homemade chili, a generous sprinkle of cheese, and then baked until crispy and melted. Serve them up with a dollop of sour cream, fresh green onions and, of course, more cheese and you have some good eats!

To me, hot dogs will always be a fun, childhood food. But sometimes, by golly, you just need a good dog! Chili cheese dogs have a reputation of being messy and hard to eat, which isn’t a bad thing, but these Baked Chili Cheese Dogs make it a much easier game. Baking the chili cheese dogs allows the chili to settle into the hot dog bun and the cheese to melt and cover them like a blanket. Each bite you take will have a little bit of everything and you won’t have to worry about chili running down your arm. I still wouldn’t advise eating these with a white shirt on, though. Or just have a Tide-to-Go stick on hand.

Since you can bake these chili cheese dogs on a baking sheet, it makes this a recipe that is easy to feed a crowd with. All you will have to do is pull a sheet pan of these Baked Chili Cheese Dogs out of the oven, have toppings nearby ready to go, and let your guests build their own dogs to their liking. You’ll have empty sheet pans before you know it!

Serve these Baked Chili Cheese Dogs for a gameday feast, feeding a crowd or for a fun family dinner. Either way they are served, they will be delicious!

Description

Baked Chili Cheese Dogs is a simple twist on a classic hot dog dish. Hot dogs are piled high with a quick, homemade chili, a generous sprinkle of cheese, and then baked until crispy and melted. Serve them up with a dollop of sour cream, fresh green onions and, of course, more cheese and you have some good eats!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1/2 pound ground hamburger
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 15.5 oz can red kidney beans, strained
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 8 hot dogs or brats
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese
  • Sour cream and chopped green onions for topping

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a medium-sized skillet. Add in the diced onion and sauté for several minutes until translucent. Add in the ground hamburger and cook until browned and broken apart, about 5 minutes. Pour the tomato sauce and kidney beans into the hamburger. Mix in the chili powder. Reduce the heat to low and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Place the hot dog buns on a rimmed baking sheet and place a hot dog in each one. Evenly spoon the prepared chili on top of all the hot dogs. Sprinkle all the hot dogs with the 1 cup of the shredded cheese, saving the rest of the cheese for topping after baking.
  3. Bake the chili cheese dogs for about 15 minutes, or until the hot dogs are heated through and the cheese is melted on top. Serve the baked chili cheese dogs with sour cream, green onions and additional cheese as toppings. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Topping ideas could include the following: sour cream, green onions, red onions, jalapeños or bacon bits.
