Why KJ Loves
Apple Butter Coffee Cake
Perfectly spiced and everything nice! This Apple Butter Coffee Cake is just what you need for breakfast or brunch this Fall and Winter. It all comes together in one bowl and makes your house smell all sorts of warm and cozy.

All About Apple Butter
Apple butter provides a concentrated flavor that gives this cake a burst of apple and spice flavor—plus the right, moist consistency.
What is apple butter?
Apple butter is like an apple sauce that is cooked low and slow until the sugars caramelize and the mixture turns a deep, amber color. It’s usually flavored with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
Where can I buy apple butter?
Apple butter is usually easy to find at your local grocery store. Check out the jams/jellies section.
But. This is also a good excuse to plan a trip to your local apple orchard! I like to spend some time outdoors enjoying the Fall weather and then stock up on apple butter. If you want to make your own apple butter from scratch, Half Baked Harvest has a great homemade apple butter recipe.
Can I substitute applesauce?
It’s important that you use apple butter. Applesauce is liquidy and not spiced. It will ruin the texture and flavor of this apple butter coffee cake recipe.

Other Apple Butter Coffee Cake Ingredients
Butter
The OG butter. Melted and stirred into the batter, it makes the apple butter coffee cake rich and moist.
Baking essentials
Flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and vanilla extract bring this apple butter coffee cake to life. That’s one thing I love about coffee cakes—I usually have most of the ingredients on hand!
Cinnamon
Because you can’t have too much spice in the Fall.
Streusel topping
Butter, sugar, flour, and cinnamon come together to create a buttery cinnamon crumble topping that takes this coffee cake to the next level.

Description
Apple Butter Coffee Cake is a cozy, spice-infused treat—sure to warm you up on a cold day.

Apple butter coffee cake is perfect for the fall and holiday season. It’s easy, mixes together in one bowl, and bakes in one pan. A simple pleasure for when the rest of life is feeling a bit hectic.
Ingredients
For the coffee cake:
- 1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter, melted
- 1 cup apple butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
For the streusel topping:
- 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) butter, melted
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
For the coffee cake:
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, apple butter, eggs, vanilla and sugar until smooth. Use a rubber spatula to mix in the flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon until combined and a batter has formed.
- Grease an angel food cake pan or a tube pan and evenly dollop the batter into the prepared pan.
For the streusel topping:
- In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, sugar, flour, vanilla and cinnamon until a crumbly streusel forms. Evenly top the prepared coffee cake batter with the streusel topping.
- Bake for about 40-42 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Let cool slightly in the pan before turning the coffee cake out onto a baking sheet, then turning it back over onto a cooling rack so that the top side (streusel side) is up.
- Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving warm. Enjoy!
Notes
- If making this coffee cake in advance, allow it to cool completely before storing it in an air-tight container or plastic storage bag. I highly recommend warming the slices back up slightly prior to serving.
