Honey Cajun Salmon Bowls

Honey Cajun Salmon Bowls are a simple, yet delicious way to get dinner on the table! Fresh salmon filets are evenly coated with a homemade honey cajun sauce and baked to perfection along with green and red bell peppers. Serve in bowls of coconut rice for the ultimate salmon meal!

How to Make the Honey Cajun Sauce

When it comes to making the honey cajun sauce to spread on top of the salmon filets, it really couldn’t get much more simpler!

In a small bowl mix together honey and cajun seasoning until combined. That’s it! Simple right? But yet SO loaded full of flavor.

The combination of the sweet honey matches perfectly with the zing of the cajun seasoning. For the cajun seasoning, you can make your own homemade blend or buy your favorite store-bought brand.

What Type of Salmon to Use

Realistically, you can use any kind of salmon you have on hand, but I highly recommend King Salmon for this recipe. As always, wild-caught preferred! King Salmon naturally has a higher fat content and it pairs perfectly with the bold flavors of this recipe.

Other types of salmon you can use are Sockeye and Coho. Since they have a lower fat content and are typically thinner filets than King salmon, the cooking time will need to be adjusted as they will not need as much time.

Build Your Honey Cajun Salmon Bowls

After the salmon is perfectly cooked through, it’s time to build your bowls! This is where the fun part comes in. The salmon cooks with red and bell peppers, so you already have one topping of your bowls set to go with the salmon. Here are some other ideas:

  • Coconut Cilantro Rice – a must if you ask me! Don’t like cilantro? Leave it out!
  • Black beans
  • Avocado/guac
  • Pineapple/mango salsa
  • Lime
  • Tortilla chips

This recipe is perfect for a simple, yet scrumptious weeknight meal. Especially with the temperatures warming back up! Even if it’s still chilly though, this recipe will make you feel all warm and good inside!

PS: leftovers of this dish were awesome and a great meal-prep option!

Description

Honey Cajun Salmon Bowls are a simple, yet delicious way to get dinner on the table! Fresh salmon filets are evenly coated with a homemade honey cajun sauce and baked to perfection along with green and red bell peppers. Serve in bowls of coconut rice for the ultimate salmon meal!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 salmon filets, about 46oz each
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. In an oven-safe skillet (I used cast-iron), heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add in the green and red bell peppers and sauté for 3-5 minutes, or until they just start to soften a bit. Remove the pan from the heat.
  2. Pat the salmon dry with a paper towel. Nestle the salmon filets into the sautéd bell peppers. In a small bowl, combine the honey, cajun seasoning and salt. Use a basting brush (or spoon) to evenly coat the salmon filets with all of the prepared sauce.
  3. Bake the salmon for 10-15 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through to desired doneness, about 145 degrees in the center.
  4. Serve the salmon and bell peppers over rice and top with desired toppings. Enjoy!

Notes

  • King salmon is preferred for this recipe as it’s natural fattiness pairs well with the bold flavors of this recipe. Coho or Sockeye salmon can be used as well.
  • I highly recommend serving the salmon and bell peppers on bed of rice and topped with desired toppings.
  • Topping ideas: black beans, avocado/guac, pineapple or mango salsa, lime wedges or tortilla chips.
