Watermelon Margaritas

Watermelon Margaritas are loaded full of sweet summertime flavor! The classic margarita gets a spin with a homemade watermelon juice and fresh cubes of watermelon soaking in all it’s goodness. All you need is a few, simple ingredients to have this delicious cocktail in hand!

If you ask me, watermelon is just one of those things you can’t go through summer without having! It’s just a summertime essential. Go to your local grocery store or corner fruit stand and pick out a juicy, sweet watermelon to use for these Watermelon Margaritas! I went with the Black Diamond variety for this and it was SO good!

How to Make the Watermelon Base

First off, making your own homemade watermelon juice may seem like a daunting or overwhelming task, but don’t fear! It only takes a few minutes time and it is definitely worth it!

Start by add the watermelon cubes and lemon lime soda to a blender. Blend until completely smooth.

Then, pour through a strainer. This step is really essential as it helps get rid of all the “pulp” leftover from the watermelon. The result is a silky smooth watermelon juice! We all agreed that the color of this homemade juice is truly a pure watermelon color. You just have to see it for yourself!

Up next, we get ready to build our margaritas!

Tips for Building Your Margaritas

When it comes to assembling this cocktail, there’s a few ways you can go about it!

  1. Make each glass individually – start by adding the ice and additional cubed watermelon pieces into the bottom of a glass. Pour in the tequila and top with the watermelon juice until the glass is full. Garnish with lime wedges and more watermelon! Here’s the glasses I used!
  2. Serve yourself style – have the watermelon juice in a pitcher and allow the guests to build their own margaritas! How fun would this be?
  3. Pitcher style – add all of the ingredients into a pitcher and pass it around!

If this cocktail doesn’t scream “Summer”, then I don’t know what does! It’s the perfect drink to serve for any backyard bbq, family gathering, picnic, or just to sip on after a long, hot day.

Fun Tip: easily make this a mocktail by eliminating the tequila! Add in a little extra lemon-lime soda to suffice for taking out the tequila and you have a fun drink to serve all around!

Description

Watermelon Margaritas are loaded full of sweet summertime flavor! The classic margarita gets a spin with a homemade watermelon juice and fresh cubes of watermelon soaking in all it’s goodness. All you need is a few, simple ingredients to have this delicious cocktail in hand!

Ingredients

Scale

For the watermelon base:

  • 4 overflowing cups cubed watermelon
  • 6 oz lemon lime soda (about half a standard can)

For a Single Serving 10 oz glass:

  • 1/2 cup watermelon base
  • 1 shot of tequila
  • 1/3 cup crushed ice
  • Additional watermelon cubes and lime wedges for garnish
  • Pink Himalayan sea salt, ground, for the glass rim

For a pitcher:

  • All of the watermelon base, about 4-5 cups
  • 5 shots of tequila
  • 2 cups crushed ice
  • Additional cubed watermelon and lime wedges for garnish
  • Pink Himalayan sea salt, ground, for the glass rims

Instructions

To make the watermelon base:

  1. Add the cubed watermelon and lemon lime soda into a blender. Blend until completely smooth. Pour through a strainer to strain out the pulp from the juice.

For the glass and pitcher sizes:

  1. Salt the rims of the glass(es) with the Pink Himalayan sea salt.
  2. Add the crushed ice into the bottom of your glass or pitcher. Add in the additional watermelon cubes (a few per serving). Pour the tequila over the ice and watermelon.
  3. Top off the glass or pitcher with the watermelon base/juice. Garnish with additional watermelon cubes and lime wedges. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Cut your watermelon cubes about 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch or 1 inch x 1 inch.
  • You can make the watermelon base a day in advance and store in the refrigerator. You will need to stir it before adding it to the cocktails.
