Turkey Sloppy Joes are deliciously comforting and take you straight back to your childhood! Loaded with all the classic sloppy joe flavors, these Turkey Sloppy Joes will have you digging in before you know it! Ground turkey, onion and green bell pepper is simmered together in a finger-licking good sauce. Pile it high on a brioche bun and the end result is a sloppy joe so good you won’t be able to resist! You won’t even mind your sauce-covered smile – it’s what a sloppy joe is all about!

How to Make Turkey Sloppy Joes:

Making these Turkey Sloppy Joes couldn’t be any more of a breeze! Sauté ground turkey (or beef if desired) with finely diced onion and green bell pepper. When cooked through, it’s time to make the sauce! Consisting of pantry staples, this sauce couldn’t get any better. Ketchup, tomato sauce, and mustard are just a few key ingredients to it. Who would’ve thought? Let it all simmer together for a little bit and then you are ready to serve!

How to Serve the Turkey Sloppy Joes:

Have you seen the movie It Takes Two? The sloppy joe scene is iconic! If you don’t know what I mean, you’ll have to look it up, but I’m definitely the kid in the glasses from that clip. He’s just digging into his sloppy joe with no shame at all! A full face full of sloppy joe at a time, haha!

But all things aside, that’s the best way to serve up a sloppy joe! They’re messy, but that’s all the fun. I like to use brioche or hamburger buns. You can leave it plain jane, or top it with whatever you like! Potato chips, coleslaw or cheese are just a few options to name some. Either way, I always like to have some potato chips on the side to scoop up the extra sloppy joe filling that falls out!

We couldn’t get over how much we loved these Turkey Sloppy Joes. Don’t worry about having a dry, unflavorful dish because you’re using ground turkey, because that is definitely not the case here! Want to know a secret to making the sauce extra indulgent? BUTTER. Butter is always the answer!

Get these Turkey Sloppy Joes on the table for a scrumptious 30 minute meal that you won’t be able to keep your hands off of. Perfect for a family dinner, weeknight meal or anytime you need a delicious, comforting meal.

Description

Turkey Sloppy Joes are deliciously comforting and take you straight back to your childhood! Loaded with all the classic sloppy joe flavors, these Turkey Sloppy Joes will have you digging in before you know it! Ground turkey, onion and green bell pepper is simmered together in a finger-licking good sauce. Pile it high on a brioche bun and the end result is a sloppy joe so good you won’t be able to resist! You won’t even mind your sauce-covered smile – it’s what a sloppy joe is all about!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground turkey
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 cup green bell pepper finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 15 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Brioche or hamburger buns for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Add in the ground turkey and sauté for several minutes until lightly browned.
  2. Add in the onion, bell pepper and garlic and sauté for a few minutes more. Add in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and mustard and stir to combine.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, brown sugar and chili powder and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and stir in the butter. Allow to simmer on low for about 15-20 minutes or until the sauce has thickened slightly. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve piled on brioche or hamburger buns. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Ground turkey or lean ground beef can be used for this recipe.
  • If your sauce gets too thick, you can loosen it with a tablespoon or so of water.
  • You can serve the sloppy joes as is, or add toppings! Some ideas are potato chips, coleslaw or cheese.
