Description

Everyone needs a good meatball recipe in their lives. These Spicy Turkey Meatballs are packed full of flavor with a subtle heat to make you keep going back for more. They are simmered in a rich tomato sauce and then can be spooned over your choice of pasta, topped off with some parmesan cheese and devoured.

Scale

Ingredients

For the sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • (2) 29 oz cans tomato sauce

For the meatballs:

  • 2 1/2 pounds ground turkey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

For the sauce:

  1. In a large Dutch oven or pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add in the onion and saute for 3-5 minutes, or until slightly translucent. Add in the garlic, red pepper flakes, basil, oregano, thyme, salt and butter and saute a few minutes more until the butter is melted. Pour in the tomato sauce, stir to combine and bring the sauce to a simmer.

For the meatballs:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the turkey, egg, salt, red pepper flakes, oregano, cayenne, bread crumbs and mozzarella cheese. Gently fold the ingredients together to combine. Using 1/4 cup portions, roll the meat mixture into meat balls.
  2. Gently place the meatballs into the simmering sauce, trying to evenly space them apart so that you don’t have any that are on top of each other. Reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid and cook for 25 minutes. Remove the lid and cook for another 10 minutes to allow the sauce to reduce slightly. Serve with your choice of noodle and Parmesan cheese. Enjoy!
